i bought 6 of these at a local hardware store w/ the prospect that they'd be silent based on what the salesperson told me. i just doubled checked the containers and i'm realizing that they do Not claim everywhere in writing that they are silent. the hum is loud sufficient to be heard by only 1 unit and x6 it's distracting. i'll be returning them.

i also bought an additional one brand called 'pestacator plus' that supposedly works by not only broadcasting noise in the immediate vicinity, but supposedly conducts via the electromagnetic field along the entire electrical wiring associated to an outlet. these were recommended for mice in between walls. they were more expensive, but they are genuinely silent and claim to be so on the packaging. i have only had them for < 1 day so i can't speak as to rather or not they work. (edited note after 48 hrs: i have not heard or seen a sign of mice for 2 days since plugging these in. first time in weeks that this has happened. They Work!)

in regard to ultrasonic rodent repellents in general, i was reluctant to spend the $ b/c i didn't know if they are effective or not. i ultimately caved in and spent the $ after fighting a loosing battle for over a month w/ chemicals & traps. my neighbor uses them and said he hasn't seen a mouse for 2 yrs where he previously killed 14 in one night. (i noticed home depot has less expensive prices after doing a google quest on these)
